So, I've had a lot on my mind lately - none of which has anything to do with our monthly enrichmnt meetings (yes, monthly, not, quarterly). This is especially true because someone told my husband, when he was picking up a truck on Wednesday, that it was going on at church this week. I thought, hey whatever, you want to plan and execute without me? BE MY GUEST.
As you can see I am really into my church assignment right now.
So imagine my surprise when my Relief Society President calls today and says, "Are you going to be at church tomorrow?" AND "Are things worked out for enrichment this Tuesday?"
Aaaaakk!
Because Clayton County Extension is supposed to have these Master Gardeners who teach free classes to the community. The coordinator told me they preferred hands on. SO I found a location (thanks Sister Owen) and turned in a few dates. THAT, friends, was over a month ago. And notwithstanding a couple other phone messages and emails, I have never heard from that man again. I am really impressed right about now.
So I find myself sitting here trying to plan some sort of gardening enrichment. Me - who has repeatedly bought flowers and left them on my back porch, using a watering can through the summer, but that's it. I AM however growing a few fruits and vegetables this year.
So I need some help. The sisters are going home with their own tomato plant, and care instructions (that I just finished researching and typing up). We are going to be eating Garden Vegetable Soup and bread. I have prinouts about "Organic" Gardening, since that was identified as an interest in our congregation. But what to actually DO WITH THEM FOR 1 1/2 HOURS? No idea. Any suggestions?
Wow Maggie! Do you really have to plan these all on your own!? When I was enrichment leader I had a whole committee of four other people to help me. That made it so much easier and fun! Can you ask for that? Our ward always seems to enjoy a lesson, a little activity, and then eat food while mingling - which we do for like an hour.
ReplyDeletei feel your pain! find someone in your ward/stake that does gardening. have them do a presentation - or talk about different types of soil, or what times to plant what stuff. you can always bring up square foot gardening vs. traditional irrigation gardening. does your stake have a garden? i ask cuz ours does and our ward has a specific spot to tend. anyway, just ideas! email me if you want anymore info on anything! hope it works out well for you!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Kirsten - let me try tell you about my ward. I am the enrichment councelor right? I have an enrichment leader (who was recently called to the stake RS and I am pretty sure is supposed to be released, but lets not go there). The first thing I asked for was an enrichment committee. Our ward has limited attendance and even more limited number of people that will actually ACCEPT callings, so you can imagine how spread out people are. But then half the names I submitted were turned down on the spot. I tried to call a lady I met, who I've only seen at church once, but because "she doesn't come to church" we didn't even extend her the opportunity, which I thought was bogus. I never got a committee. (Try, try again). I've also decided that the people I work with are so used to doing EVERYTHING themselves they don't know how to stop (again see comment about limited calling acceptance). Like the 1st councelor getting up to announce the RS birthday. I was late but I WAS IN TIME FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS and KNEW MORE INFORMATION. Or when I brought up having a newsletter my Pres said, "But I think Stacy (my enrich leader) has enough going on." So I told her Um, I know that, I was talking about ME (other perfectly computer literate person) doing it.
ReplyDeleteI really could go on and on about this topic.
