I'm still not much closer . . .

Thanks for those of you that voted on my poll - although I have to say - I've been having a hard time deciding and I had hoped for more help, most of you liked Ariana which is the only name I can't actually verify as existing in the middle ages (Tiffany, YOU ROCK! you we're the only person besides Bill and myself to put in for Enneleyn).

What do I mean existing in the middle ages? Who cares about the middle ages?

I DO - when I'm creating an SCA persona - to register my name I have to have some sort of verification of it's existance.

Anyhoo, stay tuned for my official decision on my SCA name, pictures from this weekend and more BIG NEWS at the Cox household . . .

  1. So how long do we have to stay tuned for the big news? You can't say something like that and have me not wonder....

  2. Let me verify Ariana for you!

I have a book that I love called "Names through the Ages" with sections for England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and the US. Each section contains chapters that are based on a time period. Each chapter gives some history in the topics of Politics, Society, Religion and Naming practices. Then follows lists for female, male and surnames. Cool, yes?

Anyway, looking at baby naming sites, I saw quite a few countries listed as the origin, but one did agree with a country in my book.
    It's Welsh!
The first Welsh chapter 47-700AD had some obvious precursors to the name, but in the second chapter 700-1200AD Ariana first shows up (meaning silver in the Welsh origin) and it stays in every chapter thru to the present.
So there you go. Ariana was definitely around through the whole of the middle ages.

    France had some similar ones:
    Arianne 768-987 chapter
Ariane 1328 and every chapter since
